Course overview

About This Course

Quality Engineering covers how teams build quality into every stage of software delivery, from planning and design through to release and operation.

Fast-moving teams cannot rely on a testing phase at the end. Quality engineering spreads responsibility for quality across the team, uses automation and continuous integration to give fast feedback, and uses data to decide where to focus.

You will learn quality engineering principles, how to write a risk-based test strategy, how to design continuous testing in CI/CD pipelines, how to choose meaningful quality metrics, and how to work with developers and product owners to shift testing left.

Quality Engineering is the final step in our Software Testing learning paths, building on Testing Fundamentals, API Testing and Test Automation.

Who it is for

Who Should Take This Course?

  • Experienced testers

You want to grow from executing tests to shaping quality across a team.

  • QA leads and test managers

You plan testing and report on quality for projects or teams.

  • Developers and DevOps engineers

You want to build testing and quality checks into delivery pipelines.

  • Delivery and engineering leads

You want a clear approach to quality across your teams.

Learning outcomes

What You Will Learn

By working through the course, you will build towards being able to:

  • Explain the difference between quality assurance, testing and quality engineering.

  • Write a risk-based test strategy and test plan for a project.

  • Design a continuous testing approach for a CI/CD pipeline.

  • Choose quality metrics that support decisions rather than vanity reporting.

  • Communicate test results and quality risks clearly to stakeholders.

  • Apply shift-left practices such as reviewing requirements and collaborating on acceptance criteria.

  • Plan improvements to a team's quality practices.

Curriculum

Course Curriculum

The course is organised into modules. Session order and depth may vary by training arrangement.

  1. Module 1: From testing to quality engineering

How the role of quality has changed in modern software teams.

    Topics covered include

    • Quality assurance, testing and quality engineering
    • Whole-team responsibility for quality
    • Quality in agile and DevOps
    • The cost of late defects

Practical activity: Map where quality activities happen in a sample team's process.

  2. Module 2: Test strategy and planning

Decide what to test, how much, and in what way.

    Topics covered include

    • Risk-based testing
    • Writing a test strategy
    • Test planning and estimation
    • Balancing manual, exploratory and automated testing

Practical activity: Write a risk-based test strategy for a sample product.

  3. Module 3: Continuous integration testing

Build fast, reliable feedback into delivery pipelines.

    Topics covered include

    • CI/CD pipeline stages
    • Choosing tests for each stage
    • Test environments and data
    • Quality gates

Practical activity: Design the testing stages and quality gates for a sample CI/CD pipeline.

  4. Module 4: Shifting testing left

Prevent defects by involving quality from the start.

    Topics covered include

    • Requirement and design reviews
    • Acceptance criteria and examples
    • Collaborating with developers
    • Testing in production concepts

Practical activity: Improve the acceptance criteria for a set of sample user stories.

  5. Module 5: Quality metrics and reporting

Measure quality in ways that support good decisions.

    Topics covered include

    • Useful and misleading metrics
    • Defect and escape trends
    • Test coverage in context
    • Communicating quality risk

Practical activity: Build a quality report for a sample release and recommend whether it is ready.

  6. Module 6: Improving quality practices

Lead continuous improvement in how a team works.

    Topics covered include

    • Assessing current practices
    • Root cause analysis
    • Building an improvement plan
    • Supporting change in a team

Practical activity: Analyse sample defect data and propose improvements to a team's practices.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How is quality engineering different from testing?

Testing finds problems in software. Quality engineering looks at the whole delivery process so that fewer problems are introduced and they are found sooner.

Do I need test automation experience?

Some understanding of automation helps, especially for the CI/CD module. Test Automation is good preparation.

Is this course suitable for managers?

Yes. QA leads, test managers and delivery leads will find the strategy, metrics and improvement modules particularly relevant.

Are there practical exercises?

Yes. You will write a test strategy, design pipeline testing stages and analyse sample quality data.

How can I enquire about upcoming training?

Select Enquire About This Course. The enquiry form will note that you are asking about Quality Engineering, and we'll get back to you with upcoming batches and available schedules.
