Course overview

About This Course

Testing Fundamentals introduces the principles and everyday practices of software testing, giving you the foundation for any testing or quality role.

Every software team relies on testing to find problems before users do. Good testers understand what to test, how to design tests that find real issues, and how to communicate defects so they get fixed.

You will learn why testing matters, how testing fits into the software development lifecycle, the different levels and types of testing, test design techniques, how to write and organise test cases, and how to report and track defects.

This is the starting point of our Software Testing learning paths, followed by API Testing, Test Automation and Quality Engineering.

What You Will Learn

By working through the course, you will build towards being able to:

  • Explain the purpose of testing and the core principles of software testing.

  • Describe how testing fits into different software development lifecycles.

  • Distinguish between testing levels such as unit, integration, system and acceptance testing.

  • Apply test design techniques such as equivalence partitioning and boundary value analysis.

  • Write clear, reusable test cases with steps, data and expected results.

  • Report defects with the information developers need to reproduce and fix them.

  • Work as a tester within an agile team.

Curriculum

Course Curriculum

The course is organised into modules. Session order and depth may vary by training arrangement.

  1. Module 1: Why software testing matters

The purpose of testing and the principles behind it.

    Topics covered include

    • Errors, defects and failures
    • Seven principles of testing
    • The role of a tester
    • Quality and risk

Practical activity: Identify what could go wrong in a sample application feature.

  2. Module 2: Testing in the development lifecycle

Where testing happens in different ways of building software.

    Topics covered include

    • Waterfall, V-model and agile
    • Static and dynamic testing
    • Reviews and walkthroughs
    • Entry and exit criteria

Practical activity: Review a sample requirement and list the questions and issues it raises.

  3. Module 3: Testing levels and types

The different kinds of testing and what each one checks.

    Topics covered include

    • Unit, integration, system and acceptance testing
    • Functional and non-functional testing
    • Regression and smoke testing
    • Exploratory testing

Practical activity: Plan which testing levels and types suit a sample project.

  4. Module 4: Test design techniques

Systematic ways to choose tests that find real problems.

    Topics covered include

    • Equivalence partitioning
    • Boundary value analysis
    • Decision tables
    • State transition testing

Practical activity: Design tests for a sample form using boundary values and partitions.

  5. Module 5: Writing and managing test cases

Document tests so that anyone can run them.

    Topics covered include

    • Test case structure
    • Test data
    • Traceability to requirements
    • Test management tools at an introductory level

Practical activity: Write a set of test cases for a sample login and registration feature.

  6. Module 6: Defects and agile testing

Report problems clearly and test effectively in agile teams.

    Topics covered include

    • Writing good defect reports
    • Severity and priority
    • The defect lifecycle
    • Testing within agile sprints

Practical activity: Test a sample application and report the defects you find.
