Course overview

About This Course

Microsoft Azure introduces the core services of Microsoft's cloud platform and the practices used to run workloads on it securely and cost-effectively.

Azure is widely used by organisations that already rely on Microsoft technologies, and cloud skills are now expected in many infrastructure, development and operations roles.

You will learn how Azure is organised, how to manage identities and access, how to build networks and run compute, how to store data and use managed databases, and how to monitor, govern and operate what you deploy.

This course is part of our Cloud Computing learning paths, alongside AWS and Google Cloud. Cloud Security and Azure Data Engineering build on it.

Who it is for

Who Should Take This Course?

  • Beginners in cloud

You are new to cloud computing and want to start with a widely used platform.

  • System administrators

You manage on-premises infrastructure and want to move to Azure.

  • Developers

You deploy applications and want to understand the platform they run on.

  • Career changers into cloud

You are building cloud skills for a new technical role.

Learning outcomes

What You Will Learn

By working through the course, you will build towards being able to:

  • Explain core cloud concepts and how Azure organises resources with subscriptions, resource groups and regions.

  • Manage users, groups and role-based access with Microsoft Entra ID.

  • Design virtual networks with subnets, network security groups and connectivity options.

  • Deploy and manage virtual machines, containers and app services.

  • Choose between Azure storage options and managed databases.

  • Monitor resources with Azure Monitor and control them with policies and tags.

  • Apply architecture and cost-management practices to Azure workloads.

Curriculum

The course is organised into modules. Session order and depth may vary by training arrangement.

  1. Module 1: Cloud and Azure fundamentals

Core cloud ideas and how Azure is organised.

    Topics covered include

    • Cloud service and deployment models
    • Regions and availability zones
    • Subscriptions, management groups and resource groups
    • The Azure portal, CLI and templates

Practical activity: Organise resources for a sample project into resource groups.

  2. Module 2: Identity and access

Control who can do what in Azure.

    Topics covered include

    • Microsoft Entra ID users and groups
    • Role-based access control
    • Multi-factor authentication
    • Managed identities

Practical activity: Assign least-privilege roles to a sample project team.

  3. Module 3: Networking

    Connect Azure resources securely.

    Topics covered include

    • Virtual networks and subnets
    • Network security groups
    • Load balancing
    • Hybrid connectivity options

Practical activity: Design a virtual network for a two-tier web application.

  4. Module 4: Compute

Run applications on the right kind of Azure compute.

    Topics covered include

    • Virtual machines and scale sets
    • Azure App Service
    • Containers and Azure Kubernetes Service at an introductory level
    • Serverless with Azure Functions

Practical activity: Deploy a sample web application and compare compute options for it.

  5. Module 5: Storage and databases

Store files and data with managed Azure services.

    Topics covered include

    • Blob, file and disk storage
    • Redundancy options
    • Azure SQL Database
    • Azure Cosmos DB at an introductory level

Practical activity: Choose storage and database services for a sample application and justify them.

  6. Module 6: Monitoring, governance and operations

Keep Azure workloads healthy, compliant and cost-effective.

    Topics covered include

    • Azure Monitor and alerts
    • Azure Policy and tags
    • Backup and recovery
    • Cost management and architecture good practice

Practical activity: Set up monitoring, alerts and a tagging policy for the sample application.

Practical learning

Hands-On Learning

Practical work builds and manages a sample application environment on Azure. Examples of activities include:

Hands-on work uses a Microsoft Azure environment. Whether an environment is provided, or you use your own account (and any costs involved), will be explained when you enquire.

  • Organising resources and assigning access
  • Designing and building virtual networks
  • Deploying applications to Azure compute
  • Setting up monitoring, policies and alerts
